Autistic

DISORDER: In the brain

AUTISM spectrum disorder (ASD),

more commonly known as autism, is a condition where abnormalities in the structure of the brain affect a person's communication, social interaction and language skills.

The cause is unclear, and the Autism Resource Centre, a local non-profit organisation, estimates that about 24,000 out of Singapore's population of around four million are autistic. It also says that more than 200 new cases are diagnosed annually.

Doctors say the severity of autism varies from person to person, who can display the following characteristics in any combination: laughing, crying and showing distress for no apparent reason; throwing tantrums; indifference to others and either over-sensitivity or little sensitivity to pain, sound and touch, among others.

Depending on the severity of their condition, autistic youngsters can attend special schools listed on the National Council of Social Service website at www.ncss.org.sg/sped.
